Our Philosophy
The Cornish Dog Club believes that good dog training begins with welfare, understanding, and responsible dog ownership.
Our aim is to help owners develop a positive and rewarding relationship with their dogs through regular training, education, and participation in a range of canine activities. We believe that dog training should enhance the lives of both dogs and their owners, providing opportunities for learning, achievement, and enjoyment throughout a dog’s life.
We recognize that every dog is an individual. Dogs learn at different rates, possess different strengths, and require different approaches. Training should be adapted to the dog in front of us rather than following a single rigid method. Our role is to help each dog and handler develop to the best of their ability while maintaining high standards of welfare and training.
We believe successful training develops both the dog and the handler. As dogs progress, so too should the knowledge, skills, and understanding of their owners. Education forms an important part of what we do, and members are encouraged to continue learning throughout their training journey.
While many of our activities draw inspiration from traditional working dog disciplines, our approach reflects modern understanding of canine welfare, behavior, and learning. We believe that training should be fair, structured, enjoyable, and appropriate for both dog and handler.
We recognize that many dogs were originally bred for a purpose. While most now live as companions, understanding breed characteristics, instincts, and natural behaviors helps owners provide appropriate outlets and opportunities for their dogs.
The club encourages members to focus on the journey rather than simply the result. Success is not measured solely by certificates, titles, or competition results, but by the progress made by each dog and handler as a team.
We believe that no dog or handler ever finishes learning. There is always another skill to develop, another challenge to overcome, and another opportunity to strengthen the partnership between dog and handler.
The Cornish Dog Club is committed to promoting responsible dog ownership within our local communities and encouraging members to be positive ambassadors for dogs, training, and welfare.
Above all, we believe that training should enhance the life of the dog, strengthen the relationship between dog and handler, and provide opportunities for both to learn, develop, and enjoy their time together.
Code of Conduct
Membership of the Cornish Dog Club carries a responsibility to uphold the standards, values, and reputation of the club.
Dog Welfare
Members should place the welfare of their dog above personal ambition, achievement, or competition results. Dogs should be physically and mentally fit for training, and owners should seek appropriate veterinary or professional advice where necessary. Training methods should be fair, proportionate, and suitable for the individual dog. Members should recognize and respect the needs of young dogs, older dogs, and those requiring additional support.
Respect for Others
Members should treat fellow members, instructors, visitors, and members of the public with courtesy and respect. We encourage a supportive environment where people are free to learn, ask questions, and develop their skills without fear of criticism or ridicule. Constructive feedback should be given and received professionally.
Responsible Dog Ownership
Members are expected to maintain control of their dogs at all times. Dogs should be exercised, managed, and cared for responsibly both within and outside the club environment. Members should promote positive standards of responsible dog ownership and act as ambassadors for responsible training and welfare.
Training Standards
Members should train honestly and fairly. Equipment and training methods should be used appropriately and responsibly. The club encourages continual learning, and members should remain open-minded to new ideas, knowledge, and developments within the dog training profession.
Sportsmanship
Whether participating in club activities, assessments, or competitions, members should act with integrity and fairness. The achievements of others should be respected and celebrated. Members representing the club at external events should conduct themselves in a manner that reflects positively upon the Cornish Dog Club.
Club Participation
The Cornish Dog Club exists because of the support and involvement of its members. Members are encouraged to contribute positively to the club, support fellow members, and help maintain the welcoming and friendly atmosphere that has existed since the club was founded.
Our Values
Everything we do is guided by six core values:
Welfare
The welfare of the dog comes first.
Responsibility
Promoting responsible ownership, training, and handling.
Respect
For dogs, handlers, instructors, and fellow members.
Learning
Encouraging education, development, and open-mindedness.
Participation
Creating opportunities for members to become involved and progress.
Enjoyment
Remembering that training should be rewarding and enjoyable for both dog and handler.
